Special Feature — Ajay-Kareena unveil the trailer of 'Satyagraha' in London
Kareena Kapoor and Ajay Devgn were in London where they launched the trailer of their upcoming political thriller Satyagraha. Kareena dazzled in a peach ensemble, and both of them answered the few questions that were hurled at them by the media about their fifth film together. Excerpts:
Kareena Kapoor
Kareena explained how she'd been keen to work with director Prakash Jha for a while and how she enjoyed enacting the role of a journalist, of which Barkha Dutt was only one of her inspirations. She also want to explain that even though she's spontaneous, she's completely a director's actress and how she's hoping to keep the momentum of hits going with Ajay. She seemed flattered when Ajay called her one of the "best actresses in the business".
She is called Yasmin and she says her character plays a key part in bringing together the entire movement shown in the film.
"Yasmin kind of puts together the whole revolution, brings together the entire movement that we have (shown) in the film. It's strong, it's intense and I am happy that Prakashji thought of me for this role."
The actress also said she did not prepare much for the role.
"There was not too much preparation because I am a director's actor, and I left everything to Prakashji. He guided me through the whole role, but I think there are influences of some journalists. Basically, very work-focussed and no time for love... That's basically Yasmin's character," she said.
Kareena says the role helped her understand the work pressures of a reporter.
"Our film shows that when she (the reporter) is on field and during the time of the revolution, she stays true to her work no matter what the situation is. I understand that the media has to do their job, their job is to report and have constant stories to report all the time, no matter where and how."
Ajay Devgn
Ajay was frank and forthright at the conference and insisted that Satyagraha was by no means an 'arty' film. He insisted that it was a completely commercial venture and that he was delighted to be working with director Prakash Jha again and disagreed with that socially relevant films don't make any impact at the box office. The actor also said that Satyagraha was not a male dominated film at all, and that the actresses had enough screen time and space to make an impact.
When BollyBrit® asked whether his character was inspired by a real life social activist, Ajay denied the rumours outright and insisted that none of the characters in the film were inspired by any real life personalities. Upon being probed as to whether he intends to join politics, Devgn chuckled and retorted "I would make a really bad politician..."
The trailer of the film itself seems far more explosive and dramatic than the teaser which was unveiled a couple of weeks ago. Amitabh Bachchan seems to have a come up with another winning performance, while Devgn's character seems to have shades of grey — at least in the initial portions of the film. Kapoor seems to have carried off the role with her usual exuberance and panache.
Whether the film is as power packed as the trailer remains to be seen — we'll find out when it hits theatres worldwide on 30 August 2013.
Along with Ajay Devgn, Amitabh Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor the socio-drama also stars Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpai and Amrita Rao.
