TV Review: Ranbir-Kareena on ‘Koffee With Karan’

Fifth generation Kapoors. Ranbir and Kareena came together on Karan's infamous couch

Having Kareena Kapoor Khan on Koffee With Karan for the fourth time proved to be a bit of an anti climax, given that Kareena has never really shied away from flaunting her boyfriends in public, and so didn't really have anything new to say. That coupled with the fact that the once feisty actress has mellowed down considerably after marriage would have made for a tepid show, had Karan Johar not thought of getting current heartthrob, and Kareena’s cousin, Ranbir Kapoor to share the couch with her for the first time. It was an interesting idea, given that the the real life cousins are unlikely to share the big screen together any time soon. Zoya Akhtar’s brainwave of casting the two together as siblings fell flat too and that film ultimately went to Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra.

Kareena arrived on the show in a pink gown and looked bewitching, and the equation between her and Karan, as always was warm and friendly. With the gorgeous actress not having much spice or juicy gossip to share in terms of films or her personal life, the onus was entirely on younger cousin Ranbir to spice up the show. That said though, expectedly, there were a few gems from Kareena about her relationship with Saif’s kids Sara and Ibrahim, and how she’d specifically forbidden Saif from kissing on screen. She may not have had any personal masala but it’s refreshing to see the actress finally calm down, so restrained and somewhat dignified – definitely the Nawabi influence in her life no doubt.

What perhaps proved to be the highlight of the show, and has already been written about all over the media, were her revelations of how she spent time with Ranbir’s girlfriend Katrina Kaif in Beirut, while the latter was shooting with Saif. And of course, her proclamations of how Kaif was her future sister in law to be and how she already had a playlist titled ‘The Greatest Hits of Katrina Kaif’ and how she would dance solo to all its tracks at Ranbir and Katrina’s wedding, made for some entertaining viewing.

Bebo smartly avoided awkward questions chucked at her about ex Shahid Kapoor, and refrained from making any catty comments about contemporaries Deepika, Priyanka et al. too — just goes to show that the actress has definitely come a long way.

In contrast, Ranbir’s answers were diplomatic, boring almost, but it was his expressions and discomfort at Kareena’s honesty that gave it all away. It’s apparent that he’s quite serious about Katrina, but doesn’t appreciate the consistent media speculation that surrounds his personal life. RK seems to have grown up too, and even though a bit 'meh', some of his answers were quite smart, to the point and humble.

The camaraderie between the siblings was comfortable and even though they don’t hang out together much, they seem to have a pretty cool equation.

I enjoyed the episode and am looking forward to what gossip maestro Johar has in store for us in upcoming episodes.
