'Gravity', 'American Hustle', '12 Years A Slave' lead BAFTA nominations

Sandra Bullock in the critically acclaimed Gravity

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) which hands out an iconic bronze mask annually as a reward for excellence in film, has just announced its nominations for 2014, with sci fi thriller Gravity leading the pack with a whopping 11 nods.

Gravity, which stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, has received a nod for outstanding British film, best director (Alfonso Cuarón), original screenplay, original music, cinematography, editing, production design, sound and special visual effects.

Bullock has been nominated in the best actress category for her exemplary performance in the film, along with Amy Adams (American Hustle), Emma Thompson (Saving Mr Banks), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) and Dame Judi Dench (Philomena), competing in the same category.

Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), Christian Bale (American Hustle), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Bruce Dern (Nebraska) and Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) are vying for the coveted trophy in the best leading actor category.

12 Years a Slave and American Hustle stand a chance to win with nominations in ten categories for each.

Captain Phillips has nine nominations; Behind the Candelabra and Saving Mr. Banks each have five nominations, while Philomena, Rush and The Wolf of Wall Street have four nominations each.

Blue Jasmine, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis and Nebraska have each been nominated three times; and The Act of Killing, The Butler and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug have two nominations each.

Along with Gravity, the competitors in the best film category are 12 Years A Slave, American Hustle, Captain Phillips and Philomena.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is nominated for Outstanding British Film, alongside Gravity, Philomena, Rush, Saving Mr. Banks and The Selfish Giant.

The EE British Academy Film Awards will take place on 16 February 2014 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London. The ceremony will be hosted by Stephen Fry.
