Ben Affleck was against playing The Caped Crusader in 'Batman vs Superman'

It sparked off a huge debate both online and offline, when Ben Affleck was signed on to play Batman in the Man of Steel sequel — a brave, albeit questionable move by both director Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. Surprisingly, adding to the growing apprehension of comic book fans, the Oscar winning actor himself too was initially hesitant to take on the part.

"Initially I was reluctant as I felt I didn't fit the traditional mold," said Affleck. "But once Zack showed me the concept, and that it would be both different from the great movies that Chris and Christian made but still in keeping with tradition I was excited. Doing something different and new is always tricky and part of the thrill and the risk is that initially it confounds expectations... the movie and the execution of it is what all the actors depend on and I believe in Zack's vision."

Affleck confirmed Warner Bros chief Kevin Tsujihara's description of the new Batman as a "tired and weary" Dark Knight. "Yes, Kevin described it aptly," he said. "I don't want to go further because I want to be able to capitalise on what is new about this iteration by having it be a surprise to the audience."

Affleck wasn't sure about donning the cape and cowl as Batman in Batman vs Superman

We personally think that Affleck is a great choice for the part. He's aged well, has been in some decent films and his credibility has increased ten fold after Argo swept a fair few gongs at prestigious award ceremonies earlier this year.

In the film, the Good Will Hunting star will feature alongside a much younger Henry Cavill who returns as Superman, and if rumours are to be believed Affleck may also go behind the camera for future installments of the coveted DC franchise.

Man of Steel 2 (tentatively also known as Batman vs Superman) also stars Amy Adams, Diane Lane, and Laurence Fishburne and is set to hit theaters on 17 July, 2015.

Do you think Affleck will make a good Dark Knight? Or would you have rather, Christian Bale or another face donned the cape in the film? Let us know below!
