'Besharam' is a colossal disaster at box office

Nobody saw this one coming. Ranbir Kapoor who's made some incredibly daring choices at the box office and impressed masses and critics alike, was all set to woo the box office with his latest film Besharam.

On paper, the film had everything going for it. A hot shot director who made Salman Khan recover some lost ground as a lovable, smart ass cop in Dabangg, Ranbir co-starring with real life parents Rishi and Neetu Kapoor for the first time, and trailers that gave the impression of a time pass entertainer. But alas, the film which took a thumping initial at the box office, has crashed all over. In fact, according to figures compiled by Box Office India, the crash in ticket sales is unlike anything witnessed before. The two day total for the film is around Rs 25.75 crore (£2.4m approx) with a fall of nearly 65%. Although an okay figure, a film of this magnitude and one with such a widespread release should have collected much more.

Earlier this week, we had said that the film's failure would hardly dent Ranbir's fan following, but that may not be the case now. The film has turned out to be such a disappointment, that the actor is apparently avoiding any press conferences to avoid being grilled about his latest turkey.

Despite his film being ripped apart by the critics, director Abhinav Singh Kashyap has jumped to its defense.

"I am getting calls from my friends from cinema halls. People are roaring in laughter! I am happy with film's first day collection," he said to the Times of India.

"With whatever is happening around Besharam, I smell some kind of a sinister plan. Certain forces don't want the film to succeed," he added.

Users on Twitter too were not kind to the film. #MoviesWorseThanBesharam was trending and went viral on the social media site and audiences were comparing it to disasters like Himmatwala and Ram Gopal Varma's Aag.

But is it really that bad? Have you seen the film? Do let us know what you thought of it below.
