Box Office: 'Jai Ho' opens well but not up to scratch

Salman Khan in Jai Ho

The heavily promoted, extensively anticipated, Salman Khan starrer Jai Ho, which is a remake of the Telugu blockbuster Stalin featuring Prakash Raj, opened well at ticket windows in India this morning, however the opening is not up to the mark.

Given the extensive release for the film and the initial euphoria surrounding it, Jai Ho was expected to shatter records, but nothing of the sort seems to have happened. In fact the first day opening is not even on par with Salman Khan’s own Ek Tha Tiger, which released a couple of years ago.

According to figures compiled by Box Office India, the film expectedly opened humongously at single screens, with occupancy ranging from 80-100% while multiplexes were not that impressive at just 50%. The business at multiplexes across North India was disappointing with some screens recording even lower than 50%.

The film seems to be performing the best in, Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad, with Delhi recording pretty lukewarm numbers.

The reviews for the film too are mixed. Noted analyst Taran Adarsh, expectedly, went to town singing praises of the film, however the NDTV tore the film apart saying:

"Jai Ho is a tale that is about as exciting – and just as empty – as the spiel of a politician going to the polls.

Eminently avoidable unless you are a diehard Salman Khan fan."

Overall, the film is unlikely to smash records set by Dhoom 3 and Chennai Express, but the box office is known to be unpredictable, so watch this space to see how the film performs in the coming days.
