Ranbir-Deepika in Imtiaz Ali's Tamasha

When Imtiaz Ali comes together with Sajid Nadiadwala, UTV, A.R.Rahman, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, it’s hard not to expect anything less than the moon. And those are the exact expectations off of their next, Tamasha, the trailer of which landed today, and unsurprisingly, resulted in a social media meltdown.

In what initially seems like a routine coming of age love story Tamasha revolves around Ved (Ranbir), who’s stuck in a dead end 9-5 job and how his life does a 360 degree flip when he meets Tara (a resplendent looking Deepika) and they set off for Corsica.

There seems to be a slight twist in the tale though, and from what I can gather, it seems that there’s trouble in paradise once they get a reality check and Ved has to return to his mundane life, leaving Tara bewildered and craving more than what she’s ended up with.

Basically, it’s a role reversal of sorts from their earlier outing in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani albeit this time it’s Ranbir who plays the wet blanket and Deepika the independent, free spirited soul who yearns to see the world.

Ranbir-Deepika set the screen on fire in Tamasha

Despite it all looking a tiny bit clichéd and honestly, a tiny bit underwhelming, Tamasha is one outing I’m looking forward to, especially after being subject to a series of lame duds in the form of Hero and last week’s Katti Batti. Why? Well Corsica looks eye-poppingly serene for one, you can always count on Rahman to belt out at least a couple of musical gems, and lastly, for Ranbir-Deepika’s scorching chemistry, glimpses of which are evident from just the three minutes we get here. Added to the mix are a few high voltage emotional scenes, which give the impression, that maybe, just maybe, this isn’t just another run of the mill story banking on star power to see it through. And if it is, why always the same story Imtiaz?

"I learnt a lot working with Deepika. We did our second film together, Bachna Ae Haseeno and then we did Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani which was a big hit. To see her grow as an actor and to this extent, was really heart-warming, encouraging and really inspiring for me," said Ranbir at the film's trailer launch.

"For me, Tamasha is very special, to come with this team together. And I really hope that the people give the film a chance in the theatres and they enjoy the film. It's the second film with Imtiaz and second film with Sajid Nadiadwala, my third film with Deepika and my eleventh film with Siddharth Roy Kapur (UTV Motion Pictures). So I'm really excited to work with this team," he said.

About the tagline, "Why always the same story?", Imtiaz said: "Sometimes the same kind of events occur in life and then we blame our circumstances for it and say that this is how life is. You never become who you are really as an individual.

"And the same story repeats for you, unless you take control of your life. You change that by saying that you're not enjoying matters and that you'll make your own endings in life, that's when a different kind of 'tamasha' takes place."

Tamasha is crucial for Ranbir after a hat-trick of stinkers so here’s hoping that for his sake at least, the film sees it through when it hits the marquee on 27 November.

Are you looking forward to Tamasha?
