No more off beat films for Saif Ali Khan

Going forward, Saif will only act in commercial films.

Films which have meaning and make audiences think often expand an actor creatively but very very rarely do they fare well commercially. The tide is slowly turning in B Town however, and small time films with off beat themes are slowly but surely finding an audience at the box office and making their mark. It seems though, that our very own nawab Saif Ali Khan (who is no stranger to off beat cinema - Omkara (2006), Being Cyrus (2005) to name a few) is no longer keen to work in off beat or 'hatke' films, but will instead focus on hardcore masala flicks which are guaranteed to rake in the moolah at ticket windows.

"I am looking forward to working with Sajid Khan and Prabhu Deva. I am currently working with Tigmanshu Dhulia in Bullet Raja who is a blend of an artistic as well as commercial director. He has given me an interesting character which has humour in it and it's not a dry character. Let's see how it turns out," said Khan to NDTV.

"Race 2 represents a successful film and I have realised that the numbers are very important. I want to be as successful as possible and that can happen by doing commercial films which I am going to do for a while now. My next production is probably my last niche movie unless something amazing comes along. I would also like to produce some films with other actors if I find exciting subjects," he added.

It is a little sad to see Khan go down this route. Earlier, Ajay Devgn who's given some acclaimed performances in films like Zakhm (1998) and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) opted to act in commericial films only. Their reasoning is completely understandable, but instead of focusing solely on commercial gains why not strike a balance between off beat and masala cinema?
