'Ram-leela' opens well at box office and to decent reviews

Expectedly, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus Ram-leela aka Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela opened well at ticket windows in India where it released this morning.

According to figures compiled by Box Office India, the film is faring better with multiplex audiences (with occupancy around 60%), with the best figures coming in from Mumbai followed by Gujarat, due to the local flavour of the film.

The film is apparently Bhansali's most colourful and commercial film to date and reviews for the film, mostly, have been positive.

Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave the film four and a half stars calling it "a masterpiece by the master craftsman Sanjay Leela Bhansali."

Subhash Jha of IANS gave the film a glowing review too going as far as calling it "the most vital romantic musical in the last five years. To experience it is to serenade the divine. To miss it would be a crime."

Noted critic Komal Nahta also praised the film saying "...the film has masala for audiences of all classes and age-groups..." and that the film is set to be a "surefire hit".

Raja Sen (Rediff), however, panned the film calling it an "an overplotted, bloody mess" while the NDTV review was a tad scathing too and referred to the film as "all body and no soul."

The decent opening for the film should bode well for Ranveer Singh, who despite being an able newcomer, is yet to score that one huge illustrious hit that will kick-start his career. For actress Deepika Padukone, the potential success of the film may mean her fifth consecutive hit after Cocktail, Race 2, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Chennai Express.

Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela is based on the Shakespearean classic Romeo and Juliet and also stars Supriya Pathak, Richa Chadda, Abhimanyu Singh, Gulshan Devaiah and Sharad Kelkar.
