Sneak Peek: Ghanchakkar

We have the first look of Ghanchakkar which reunites Vidya Balan with Emraan Hashmi after 2011's box office smash The Dirty Picture

Directed by Rajkumar Gupta who gave us the sensitive No One Killed Jessica (2011), Ghanchakkar is a situational comedy about an ex conman and his over ambitious wife and the ridiculous situations they find themselves in.

Character Sketches

Emraan Hashmi aka Sanjay Athray aka Mr Ghanchakkar

Sanjay Athray is a vault breaker who has taken voluntary early retirement from his profession. His current behaviour is completely like that of an elderly retired person. He attends to his small garden early in the warning, watches TV most of the day and sips quality wine at night. He dresses in comfy cottons and is an absolutely unflappable cool guy. Sanju's demeanor changes after he comes out of his 'retirement' to be part of a heist with some other conmen who knew an ex-partner of his. Sanju is entrusted with the loot and he forgets where it is kept. He begins to forget a lot of other things too but his memory is extremely sharp when it comes to certain other things like anniversaries for example. As the pressure begins to mount to find the loot, a brutally honest, ultra cool Sanju suddenly starts to act drastically. He becomes extremely hassled and suspicious, prone to sarcasm and bouts of anger. It starts getting increasingly difficult to decide whether he is really affected by some sort of amnesia or is he just play-acting. Is Sanju suffering from some medical problem or is he making a 'ghanchakkar' out of all of us?

Vidya Balan aka Neetu Athray aka Mrs Ghanchakkar

It would be rather difficult to guess from her clothes that Neetu is a regular reader of Vogue, which she buys from the neighbourhood newspaper stand. It would also be difficult to guess from the taste of the dishes she makes that Neetu is very fond of cooking. And it is even more difficult to guess from her sweet demeanour that a fire-brand Punjaban lies trapped inside. The old adage "opposites attract" describes her marriage to a T, when we compare Neetu to the love of her life, Sanjay. Neetu is not into comfy clothes, she is into fashion atrocities. She is exhibitive about her feelings and doesn’t really enjoy the contemplative retirement that they are leading. She never thinks enough is ever enough, she believes life should be lived young when one IS young and everything from the TV to the apartment to family holidays should be kingsize. But as Sanju now observes her suspiciously, he begins to wonder is this loving homemaker for real or is she actually conning the cons?

How Hashmi and Balan fare in a comedy remains to be seen, and we'll find out soon enough (28 June to be exact) whether they’re as good at tickling the audience's funny bone as they are at tugging at their heartstrings.

The first look of the film does look rather quirky though. What do you think? Tell us below.
