Leonardo DiCaprio, who until now, has been mostly snubbed at the Academy Awards, may finally be within grasp of the coveted trophy for his supposedly exemplary work in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street.

The film which has received five nominations at the prestigious awards, opens in the UK this week, a few weeks after its North American release, and the general consensus from British critics is mostly mixed.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian loved the film and gave it four stars (out of a possible five), saying “…it's not subtle, but Martin Scorsese's depiction of the debauched rise and fall of a wayward Wall Street broker is an exhilarating riot of bad taste.”

The Financial Times review of the same, however, was largely scathing, with Nigel Andrews calling the film “long, punishingly samey” and having “no sense of structure”.

British reviews aside, The Wolf of Wall Street has scored highly on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and is ‘Certified Fresh’ with an impressive 75% of critics praising the film.

Martin Scorsese, who's known for repeating his actors, directs DiCaprio in their fifth collaboration together after Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed and Shutter Island.

In the film, DiCaprio stars as Jordan Belfort, a New York stockbroker, who refuses to co-operate in a large securities fraud case, between the corporate banking world and the mob.

The Wolf of Wall Street is a true story based on the book of the same name by Jordan Belfort who ended up spending 22 months in jail, but now works as a motivational speaker and author.
