"While a great many people see you as a hero, there are some who prefer the word ‘vigilante’... You’ve operated with unlimited power and no supervision and that's something the world can no longer tolerate…"

Marvel has this knack for throwing a surprise at us once in a while. Last night being a prime example, when out of the blue, they premiered a full length trailer for the third Captain America film of their cinematic universe during Jimmy Kimmel Live, and like nearly all their trailers, it mostly blew the socks off of everyone and gave a fairly good insight into what to expect next.

Revolving mainly around the conflict between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark the events of Captain America: Civil War unravel after the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age Of Ultron, where Cap, in a bid to rescue his esteemed friend-turned-foe-turned-friend again Bucky, turns against Iron Man and invokes the wrath of the government forcing each of the Avengers to pick a side leading inevitably to a few unwarranted casualties.

Earlier this year, Age Of Ultron divided audiences and not many warmed to Whedon’s adaptation and interpretation of one of Marvel’s most dreaded antagonists and Spader’s somewhat pansy portrayal of the same. Civil War, however, seems to pick up where the spectacular (and underrated) Winter Soldier (also directed deftly by the Russo brothers), left off albeit with a more sombre tone with political undercurrents, and despite the trailer taking a while to unravel, the final product overall, looks like its set to raise the bar pretty high with its kick ass fight sequences, nerve-racking tension and more focus on character development.

Chris Evans finally seems to have some depth to his otherwise flat character (again it was more the character, and not really much to do with his actual performance), while Anthony Mackie’s Falcon sees himself getting some more welcome screen time too. Not to forget a VERY quick glimpse at Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, and despite his mostly bad ass get up, this tweet did make me giggle, and nod in agreement a tad:

In addition Civil War sees the return of a slew of familiar faces including Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye, AND introduces Tom Holland in his first appearance as Marvel's Spider-man although, sadly we don't get to see him in the trailer!

Official Synopsis

Captain America: Civil War finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability. Get ready to pick a side and join the nonstop action playing out on two fronts when Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War opens in U.S. theaters on May.

There's a lot of ass kicking going on between frenemies this time round

Captain America: Civil War also features an all star cast comprising of Emily VanCamp, Don Cheadle, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Frank Grillo, Daniel Brühl and William Hurt and hits the marquee 6 May 2016.
