Katrina Kaif will not star in 'Welcome' sequel

Katrina Kaif in Welcome

Another day, another sequel. With filmmakers fast running out of original ideas, the order of the day is to just rehash whatever's worked in the past, with the same star cast except with a few added surprises.

A sequel to the blockbuster comedy Welcome (2007) was announced a few days ago, albeit with an entirely new cast. The fact that Akshay Kumar from the original has been replaced with John Abraham was already known, but it seems that the film's leading ladies (Katrina Kaif, Malika Sherawat) will not be repeated either.

A source connected to the film says to DNA India, “Katrina was married to Akshay in Welcome and as he’s not in the sequel we cannot cast her either. As for Mallika, she is no longer as hot as she used to be, so Anees (Bazmee) is keen to replace her with Sunny Leone. As for Katrina’s role, while many actresses are being considered, Nargis Fakhri is most likely to land the part opposite John, who has stepped in in place of Akki.”

Producer Firoz Nadiadwala however refuses to confirm the name of the leading lady. He plays it safe with, “We are in talks with different actresses and will sign them according to their availability of dates.”

Anees confirms, “Yes, Katrina and Mallika won’t be a part of Welcome 2. The story in the sequel is not an extension of Welcome but completely different from the original. The characters in Welcome Back are absolutely different from the original.”

Well here's hoping the sequel is a little better than the original, which despite being a success, was an assault to audiences' senses.
