'R... Rajkumar' takes decent start at box office but ripped to shreds by critics
"Just watched first half of #RRajkumar in chandan ka stall. The claps, the hoots, the whistles — this is what we live for! Yeh hota hai AUDIENCE ka review bossss!"
That's what Sonakshi Sinha, the heroine of R... Rajkumar tweeted earlier today. Perhaps she's taken the reviews of the film, which opened in India this morning to heart, after it was torn to shreds by critics, with some going as far as calling it 'the worst film of the year.'
Sinha shouldn't take it so personally though. R... Rajkumar which is directed by Prabhudeva and sees her opposite Shahid Kapoor for the first time, has opened reasonably well to collections of about 50%, and is likely to do well in the Northern territories of India. According to Box Office India, the film's opening is similar to Ram-leela, although the Ranveer-Deepika starrer had good reviews in its favour, while the Shahid-Sonakshi starrer will have to rely solely on the mood of the movie going public.
"At the end of it, all that remains with you is some 'gandi baat'. Quite literally," said Gaurav Malani of The Times Of India.
The Indian Express review of the film was brutal too:
"I was left asking, why was R.. Rajkumar made? It is nothing but blank putrid noise. R.. for Rubbish. Zero star..." — Shubhra Gupta.
Taran Adarsh, who usually loves this kind of masala fare, was harsh on the film too:
"On the whole, R... Rajkumar doesn't work. It is Prabhu Dheva's weakest Hindi film to date!"
The film is crucial for its star Shahid Kapoor, who's had a whopping eight flops in a row. Here's hoping for his sake, that it sails through and shuts his detractors up once and for all.
Have you seen R... Rajkumar? What did you think of it?
